Note that a shell contains a certain number of reserved characters. Unbalanced quotes, paranthesis, etc will get into the way of your editing. If you need to edit a text which is a bit longer and is likely to contain the reserved characters, you are better to just type `jrnl`and `return`. Only then enter the text of your journal entry. Or you might want to use an external editor (see below).

Most shell contains a certain number of reserved characters, such as ``#`` and ``*``. Unbalanced quotes, parenthesis, and so on will also get into the way of your editing. For writing longer entries, just enter ``jrnl`` and hit ``return``. Only then enter the text of your journal entry. Alternatively, :doc:`use an external editor <advanced>`).
